Do You Need Drywall Repair Before You Paint? Here's How to Tell

Jacob Brochu • September 16, 2026

Cracks, soft spots, and water stains won't disappear under a fresh coat — here's what to check before you schedule your next paint job.

New paint can make a room feel brand new — but paint doesn't fix what's underneath it. If your walls have underlying damage, a fresh coat will actually draw more attention to the problem, not hide it. At JM Painting, we walk every room with our clients before a project starts for exactly this reason: catching drywall issues early saves you from paying for the same wall twice. Here's what our Maine painting and home repair crew looks for before we ever open a paint can.

Cracks That Keep Coming Back

Small hairline cracks from normal home settling are common and usually an easy fix. But if a crack reappears after being patched, or it's wider than a credit card, that's a sign of movement in the wall that paint alone won't solve. Our team can tell the difference between cosmetic settling and a crack that needs real repair before your interior painting begins.

Soft or Bubbling Spots

Press gently on a suspicious area of drywall. If it feels soft, spongy, or you notice bubbling paint or wallpaper, there's likely moisture getting into the wall — from a roof leak, plumbing issue, or condensation. Painting over this without addressing the source just seals the moisture in. This is especially common in coastal Maine homes, where humidity works its way into walls year-round.

Water Stains

Yellow-brown rings or streaks mean water has passed through the drywall at some point. Even if the stain looks dry now, it needs to be treated with a stain-blocking primer at minimum — and if the leak is still active, it needs to be found and stopped before any painting happens. Our home repair services cover exactly this kind of prep work, so the leak and the wall get handled together, not separately.

Nail Pops and Uneven Seams

Small raised bumps where fasteners were used, or visible seams between drywall sheets, will show through even the best paint job, especially under natural light. These need to be reset, mudded, and sanded smooth first — the same careful surface prep we use on every interior painting project.

Holes, Dents, and Gouges

Beyond the obvious doorknob dent or moving-day scrape, look closely along baseboards and corners where furniture gets bumped repeatedly. Small damage is a quick patch job; larger holes may need a drywall patch cut in before we prime and paint.

Why This Matters Before You Paint

Painting over unresolved drywall issues doesn't just look bad — it can mean paying for the same wall twice. A patch that isn't properly sanded and primed will telegraph through the topcoat, and a moisture problem that isn't addressed can cause paint to fail within months, whether it's an interior wall or your home's exterior siding and trim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can JM Painting repair drywall and paint in the same visit? Yes. As a painting and home improvement company based in Saco, Maine, we handle drywall repair and painting as one seamless project instead of requiring you to hire a separate contractor for each step.

How do I know if damage is cosmetic or structural? Hairline cracks and small dents are typically cosmetic. Recurring cracks, soft spots, or water stains usually point to an underlying issue — see our FAQ page for more common questions or send us photos for a quick assessment.

Do you serve my town? We proudly serve Saco, Biddeford, and the surrounding Southern Maine communities, including Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, and South Portland.
